The Little 500 bike race has been an Indiana University tradition since 1951, and has become the largest collegiate bike race in the United States. This year, the MD Logistics Team gets to be a part of this great tradition. On the afternoon of April 19, 2013 we will be supporting a group of four young ladies from the Theta Phi sorority as they embark on the 100 lap relay-style race around the cinder track of Bill Armstrong Stadium. In front of a crowd of 20,000 people, and after months of training, these ladies will vie for a spot on the winner’s podium.

“We are proud to be a sponsor and support for these young ladies. They have trained hard for this race, while still maintaining a high level of academic achievement, and we applaud that. Having a number of IU alumnus on staff here at MD, it feels good to support the Little 500 event”, stated Emilie Gerbers, Manager of Marketing and Business Development.

Pharmaceutical distributor: New client will bring growth

Executives for MD Logistics, which expanded from Indiana to Stead in 2011, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a large client in the second quarter of 2013 that’s expected to boost total revenue from the company’s northern Nevada operations from 5 to 20 percent.

MD Logistics purchased a 55,000-square-foot distribution facility in Stead in early 2011 and landed its first client in September.

The company targeted a western-region expansion in order to better serve growing markets throughout 12 western states. MD Logistics serves the rest of the country from its 700,000-square foot headquarters at Plainfield, Ind.

In addition to quicker shipping times and lower transportation costs to Western markets, the northern Nevada facility helps the company’s pharmaceutical customers by spreading out their products over several bases of operations. It also allows MD Logistics to better tap into the strong biomedical industry in South San Francisco, which could provide a large pool of future customers.

The building formerly housed another pharmaceutical distributor, so MD Logistics was primed for business once it moved in.

“We were able to acquire the facility fully fixtured,” says MD Logistics President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Sell. “It was the right use, the right need at the right time, and it worked out perfectly for us.”

Sell has worked in third-party pharmaceutical distribution for almost three decades, and he says Reno was always a strong candidate to house a western expansion.

The company also did some in-house studies about the feasibility of serving its customers throughout the West from Reno.

“This was very well located from a distance and highway and infrastructure perspective,” Sell says. “It just made sense to us.”

MD Logistic’s northern Nevada facility also could see some large growth from the company’s retail distribution line, which is currently handled from its flagship facility. Moving those operations West better utilizes the capacity of operations in Reno, and it also frees up space at the cramped Indiana location.

“We fully intent to bring that business model here,” Sell says. “As we continue to talk to our customers, we are going to continue to divert more inventory West for those customers, which will open up capacity back East. We will continue to level-load the two facilities.”

MD logistics currently employs eight, but it expects to nearly triple its workforce as it ramps up with its expected client. The company will hire additional warehouse associates, materials handlers, quality control supervisors and other positions as it brings new clients onboard.

The company also could almost double its footprint in Stead by building a second facility if future business merited expansion, says Vice President Jeff Luthman.

“We see a need for our customers to continue to push West,” Luthman says.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall in New Jersey sometime late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. As a result, numerous transportation hubs have closed in anticipation of the storm. States of emergency have been declared in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia.

SEKO Logistics will remain open throughout the storm, but as power outages may affect local operations in the Northeast US, SEKO will maintain its U.S. 24 hour customer service center as a backup location located at its corporate office in Illinois. Customers can also login to MySEKO or track your freight on our website.

• Port of Norfolk – Closed
Roads – SEKO Logistics provides home delivery services throughout the United States, and many scheduled deliveries may have to be postponed and rescheduled throughout the Northeast United States. Roads and bridges may be closed or inaccessible starting Monday.

The Age of Value-Added Services in Global Logistics: Negotiating to Grow Global Capabilities – Global Trade Mary Shacklett | Aug/Sept 2012

Serving a global clientele and keeping customers happy shook one e-retailerdown to the ground—where logistics made the difference. Part of the dilemma was learning how to consolidate shipments into containers, sometimes even with competitor companies, so that no container left port in one country partially filled. Then there were traditional logistics problems to grapple with. Once in port at the receiving country, should goods be shipped by truck or via inter-modal transportation? These were decisions the retailer relied on their global logistics provider to make—but that wasn’t all.

There were issues with localization in the destination countries, like ensuring that instructions on the boxes of packaged goods were printed in local languages. Providing local services and order-taking were also challenges. The company considered whether it was more efficient to have their own employees “on the ground” in these distant locales, or enlist a 3PL (third party logistics provider) that could offer value-added services like localizing package instructions, warehousing and distribution, and even order taking and customer service.

It was decided to outsource warehousing, distribution, order taking and customer service functions to the 3PL. With the help of its 3PL, the e-retailer also rerouted much of its air freight to ocean freight, because the 3PL could expeditiously manage inventory demands locally with a make-to-order approach. This resulted in a seven-figure annual savings.

“Our customers are asking us to do more and more things for them that are not even thought of in traditional supply-chain logistics,” says Mark Sell, CEO of MD Logistics, a 3PL specializing in supply-chain solutions. “The services they are asking for and that we are offering include taking orders for goods, managing order systems, invoicing customers and even managing receivables. The largest growth areas for value-added services have been in packaging, kitting and labeling. Customers want us to deliver these elements as a turnkey service to them, so what we are seeing is considerable business process outsourcing.”

PLAINFIELD, IN July 27, 2012 – The 5th Annual Dave Kiebach Memorial Golf Tournament will be sponsored once again by MD Logistics. Dave Kiebach, who was a founder and co-principle at MD Logistics, passed away suddenly in November 2007. In the years since, many of Dave’s closest family and friends have held a memorial golf tournament at the Country Club of Indianapolis. This years outing will be held on September 17, 2012, and will include numerous local sponsors, raffle prizes and a silent auction.

The revenues raised each year from the Dave Kiebach Memorial Golf Tournament are donated to the David H. Kiebach Smile Fund, one of the Hendricks County Community Foundations funds that helps local causes and organizations treat the needs of the community’s children. Those needs may include children who are hungry, lack clothing, have healthcare needs or need funds for advanced education.

Dave Kiebach was a competitor in sports and in business. He played golf and basketball, rode horseback, hunted, fished, swam and boated. He was a longtime friend and business partner with Mark Sell in founding and building MD Logistics, Inc. in 1996. In addition, Dave had 25 years of experience working with numerous logistics and airfreight companies. Most of all Kiebach was a family man, known to dote on his wife Diana and two children, MacKenzie and Sean.

If you would like to participate in this years outing, you may download the entry form.
